Visit of the Museum
The Correr Museum unveils several aspects of the past Venetian culture and history.
The Museum can be accessed from the Ala Napoleonica, a wing of the Royal Palace in St. Mark’s Square. The visitor moves backwords in the history of Venice. The elegant Neoclassical rooms decorated for Napoleon first and later for the Austrian Empress Sissi preserve a section with wonderful sculptures of Antonio Canova (Italy greatest Neoclassical sculptor) while all along the ‘Procuratie Nuove’ are displayed paintings and objects illustrating the history of Venice. Some major Renaissance masterpieces are preserved here, such as the ‘Courtesans’ of Carpaccio.
From this Museum it is also possible to visit the Library of St. Mark. Its sumptuous late-Renaissance decoration represents the cultural itinerary that prepared the Venetian nobleman as ruler of the State.
